The family farm where I lived
was nestled among the rolling hills of the North Saskatchewan River
near Lea Park, Alberta. This beautiful setting has been the roots
and inspiration of my drawings, paintings and sculpture throughout
my life. I was raised on a farm in rural Alberta. There was no access
to painting or sculpting classes. Just getting to school was a long
bus ride each day. As a child I would paint, draw, sculpt and design
with whatever materials were available. I entered locally offered
art contests, and my art was also entered in the local fairs. The
prizes were often art supplies or vouchers with which I was able
to purchase more paint and paper. While completing my High School
education my parents were able to purchase a Commercial Art Course
for me through Correspondence, thus giving me my most valued background
in drawing, composition and design. After leaving the rural community
and moving to Edmonton I was able to study under a variety of Professors
through the University of Alberta Extension. At the University I
spent four years studying, drawing, design, mixed media techniques,
photography, and watercolors.
I am a self taught Sculptor.
My technique has grown from the first simplistic nativity scene
sculpted from clay to the large Wizards or Mystical Characters of
today. My recent interest in Brazilian Soapstone Carving again swings
toward the mystical characters.
"To Paint, to Carve,
to Sculpt. You could take away all the tools from an artist but
you could never take away the art from within".
